Tarp over a home damaged by a tree fall Tarp over a home damaged by a tree fall

In March of 2023 our area sustained a severe wind storm that caused massive damage to homes & businesses. Fortunately, SERVPRO® of Bullitt & N. Nelson Counties is skilled in storm clean-up and repairs.

When our clients call us after sustaining storm damage the first thing we do is secure their home. We make sure that the damaged areas are covered by boards or tarps to ensure no further damage is incurred. The next step is guiding the home owners in the insurance claim process. We will take photos and write an estimate to provide to your insurance company. This step may seem small, however it is the key step to getting your insurance claim approved.

Once we have the insurance company's approval to do repairs, we will get scheduled with the homeowner to get the work started. As the homeowner you will have to pick out paint colors, flooring types & design, and anything else that will go into doing the repairs.

SERVPRO® knows that damage to your home can be a very stressful situation to deal with and that's why we are here to help you from the beginning to the end. When we have completed the repairs on your home it will be "Like it never even happened."®

Damage after a tornado Damage after a tornado

On April 13, 2022 an EF1 tornado hit several different areas of Jefferson & Bullitt Counties in Kentucky. A lot of homes sustained wind, rain, & hail damage and SERVPRO of Bullitt & N. Nelson Counties was there to help with the clean-up and repairs. Thankfully there were no serious injuries reported and that is probably due in part to our local weather men & women alerting us to take cover. What if you don't have any power though & you have no way to know when to take cover? Below are six signs to look out for when possible tornadoes are approaching.

  1. The color of the sky may change to a dark greenish color.
  2. A strange quiet occurring within or shortly after a thunderstorm.
  3. A loud roar that sounds similar to a freight train.
  4. An approaching cloud of debris, especially at ground level.
  5. You can see debris falling from the sky.
  6. A rotating funnel-shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm.

If you notice any of these signs it is time to take cover in an interior room, preferably a room without windows, and shelter in place until the tornado has passed.

At SERVPRO of Bullitt & N. Nelson Counties, our main goal is for our community to stay safe, however if your home does sustain damage of any kind we are here to offer a helping hand.

Spring is upon us and with Spring comes possible severe weather. Spring weather in Kentucky is very unpredictable, that is why it's always best to be prepared for anything. It never fails that Kentucky will be hit by some variation of severe Spring weather. So how can we be prepared for what Mother Nature might throw our way? Check out the helpful tips below to help you and your loved ones stay safe and be ready for anything.

  1. Have a plan. Make sure you and your loved ones are on the same page and you all know how to contact one another and where to meet up should there be severe weather.
  2. Prepare an emergency kit; make sure it has a 3 day supply of water, non perishable food, medications, personal hygiene products, batteries, a flashlight, a weather radio, a first-aid kit, and portable cell phone chargers.
  3. Make sure all of your important documents & keepsakes are stored in waterproof, sealable bags.
  4. If possible try to have a generator on hand, as severe storms have the possibility of knocking out power for days or weeks.

These tips will help keep you safe, however if your home should sustain damage due to severe weather make sure to contact your insurance provider to see if the damage is covered.

Storm season typically peaks in April across the Bluegrass state. There are steps to take to prepare for the potential damage to your home.

The first thing is to check on what is covered under your homeowner's insurance. Policies usually cover damage due to fire, ice, tornadoes and wind. But most policies do not cover flooding due to storms.

Immediately after the storm inspect the home and watch out doe downed power lines, broken glass and nails. If you do see damage after severe weather, contact your insurance company. Have your home looked at by a qualified restoration expert to determine what repairs will be needed.

SERVPRO of Bullitt & N. Nelson counties is there to clean and restore your home after storm damage. We are Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Storm restoration technicians need to tear out damaged materials and rebuild your home. This is what the restoration process looks like.

The first step the specialist will do is remove as much water as possible using an industrial pump.

The second step they will do is remove the damaged materials. They will tear out insulation, tiles, carpet and ruined drywall.

Thirdly they will dry out the remaining structure to bring the humidity level back to normal. this is when they will also disinfect the area to remove bacteria.

The final stage of the restoration process is the rebuilding involved in the home. This is where new flooring is installed and new walls are put up. they will paint and wallpaper to make the home look like there was never any damage.

A Homeowner's policy usually covers standard weather patterns. Homeowners may also choose to invest in Hurricane or Flood insurance. There are certain disasters related to severe weather.

1) Sewage backup

2) Roof damage

3) Flooding

4) Mold Growth

You will need a specific policy for flood damage because a typical insurance plan will probably not cover flooding related to storms.

High winds can lead to structural concerns such as damaged rooflines. Flooding can weaken your home's foundation in addition to mold growth due to increased moisture and humidity.

When a flood or severe weather effects your home you will need help in cleaning up the damage. SERVPRO of Bullitt & North Nelson Counties can help by putting up tarps around the property to eliminate further damage.

Certain areas are more prone to flooding requiring specific policy upgrades. Make sure you have coverage for the structure, water, wind and property loss.

Be Ice Storm Ready

12/6/2017 (Permalink)

Whether there is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, or sleet and snow; all of these can cause property damage to your home or business. You can't control Mother Nature but you can be prepared so here are some tips to help you:

-Check for tree limbs and branches that might have fallen.

-Roofs, pipes and gutters should all be inspected and make sure they are in proper working order. Clear gutters from debris, a damming effect could cause roof damage or interior water problems. Downspouts should be facing away from the home or building.

-Clean your chimneys and exhaust systems from debris.

-Test your gas lines for leaks.

-Inspect your property for proper drainage.

-Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If any pipes are under cabinets leave the cabinets open. Make sure exterior pipes are properly insulated.

-If there are any outdoor faucets, you might want to shut the water off.

Protecting Your Home from Storm Damage

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

Snow isn’t the only thing leaving its mark on our homes this time of year. It may not be winter quite yet in Bardstown and Springfield, but storms are still whipping through cities causing power outages and home damage. According to the National Storm Damage Center (NSDC), damage caused by trees during severe weather, account for over $1 billion in property damage. Broken limbs or trees can cause mass amounts of damage to your property if they make contact. Such damage can be done to roofing, siding, windows and even structure to the home, causing lots of expensive repairs. Unfortunately there is no way to stop the unpredictable weather, but there are ways to prevent damage from happening to your home.

Assessing your tree

The National Storm Damage Center insists on trying to keep trees healthy and surviving as long as they’re not posing an immediate threat, but how do we know if the tree is ready to be taken down or not? There are different ways that a tree can be assessed to give you a better answer to that question.

·      Broken limbs – the larger amount of large limbs that are broken on a tree, the less likely it is to survive or recover from storm damage. This tree is unfortunately probably ready to be taken down.

·      Amount of limbs broken – A tree showing more than 50% of it’s limbs broken or damaged means that it will most likely have a difficult time producing leaves in the upcoming season, therefor making it harder for it to survive.

·      Leader branch – Is the upward-trending branch at the top of the tree broken? Without this branch being intact, it is likely that the tree’s growth will be stunted, making it less likely to survive.

·      Location – Last, but not least is location. Saving trees is important for our environment, but keeping lives safe is obviously more important to us. The biggest decision on whether to keep a tree in your yard or not is purely the location of the tree. Is it in a location that could cause damage or injury to your home, car or family if it were to break? If so, it is better to be safe than sorry and get it removed before a storm comes through.

Flood Facts

5/31/2017 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.

There is always potential for flood damage no matter where you live. According to the American Red Cross floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers these flood safety tips:

-Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.

-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are riding rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

-Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

Can Carpet Be Saved After Flood

5/25/2017 (Permalink)

After a flood, many homeowners and property managers wonder if their carpet and pad can be saved.  The answer is, it depends.  Factors such as the age and quality of the carpet and pad, as well as the type of installation used, have to be taken into consideration. However, the type of floodwater that caused the damage is most important when determining whether or not carpet and padding can be salvaged.

There are 3 floodwater categories that determine whether the carpet and padding can be restored to their pre-disaster condition:

  • Category 1 (clean water): non-contaminated water that may come from a broken pipe, sink, etc. After the water has been extracted, carpets and pads can be dried and restored in place.
  • Category 2 (gray water): dirty water that has been released by sump pumps, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. The carpet can usually be restored if it has been wet for less than 48 hours. The pad is replaced in most cases.
  • Category 3 (black water): water containing dangerous contaminants that may originate from sewage and toilet backflows as well as from floods caused by natural disasters. To protect your family’s health, carpets and pads should be removed, discarded and replaced.

Since every water damage situation is different, you cannot know for sure if or when your carpet and pad can be salvaged until you have a professional restoration company inspect the situation.

The faster you report the disaster, the lower the costs will be. If you’re dealing with a flooding problem, contact  SERVPRO of Bullitt & N. Nelson today speak to a Mitigation Specialist today. 502-904-0710
